There is just something about October that makes me want to slow down a little.
The cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, pumpkins showing up on porches, and that first evening when you realize you might actually need a blanket—it all feels like an invitation to settle in and enjoy home a little more.
And while I love a good fall décor find (you know I do!), I also believe making your home feel special doesn’t have to mean buying all new things. Sometimes the best seasonal touches are already sitting in a cabinet, tucked away in a closet, or growing right outside your door.
Bring a Little of the Outside In
One of the easiest—and cheapest—ways to decorate for fall is simply to look outside.
Clip a few branches from a tree or bush and place them in a favorite vase or pitcher. Gather pinecones, acorns, interesting twigs, or dried grasses and fill a bowl on your coffee table. Even a handful of pretty leaves scattered around a candle can bring a little bit of October indoors.
I love that these kinds of decorations don't have to be perfect. In fact, I think they're prettier when they're not.
Make Your Home Smell Like Fall
Is there anything better than walking into a house that smells like fall? Join us Tuesday, October 20 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm to create your own fall simmer pot. We will have all the supplies you just pay $10 at the door.
Don't Forget the Front Porch
Your porch doesn't have to look like it belongs in a magazine.
A few pumpkins in different shapes and sizes, a mum, an old basket, lantern, wooden stool, or even branches gathered from the yard can make your entrance feel warm and welcoming.
I especially love décor that can carry us from October into Thanksgiving. Choose natural colors and textures, and you can enjoy them all season without having to completely redecorate in November.
Something Warm From the Kitchen
October also makes me want to bake something! Here's an easy treat that's perfect with a cup of coffee, to take to a friend, or to enjoy on a Saturday morning.
Easy Pumpkin Bread
You'll need:
- 1 can pumpkin purée
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup oil
- 1 cup sugar
- 1½ cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: chocolate chips or chopped pecans
Mix the wet ingredients together, then stir in the dry ingredients just until combined. Pour into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350°F for approximately 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Simple, cozy and very October.
Create a Home That Feels Like You
I think we sometimes put pressure on ourselves to make everything picture-perfect. The perfect table. The perfect porch. The perfectly decorated house.
But the older I get, the more I realize that a beautiful home isn't really about how much we spend or how perfectly everything coordinates.
It's about how it feels.
Does someone feel welcome when they walk through your door? Is there a comfortable place to sit and talk? Does your home give you a place to rest at the end of the day?
Those are the things that matter.
So this October, light the candle. Pull out the blanket. Gather some branches from the yard. Bake something that makes the whole house smell wonderful. Invite a friend over for coffee—even if everything isn't perfectly picked up.
Enjoy the season you're in.
